TO London, at the Curzon Mayfair, Victoria Beckham presented the new Netflix docuseries (out October 9) which bears his name. Three episodes that retrace her trajectory: from the Spice Girls years to the challenges of his fashion brandwhich risked closing. A personal story, sober but direct, which brings to the center the struggle of building an identity different from that of “Posh Spice”.

On the Red Carpet of the London premiere, alongside David and her children Romeo, Cruz and Harper, the designer chose a white outfit consisting of a blazer, top and pencil skirt. Light years away from the “Posh” of the ninetieshere’s who Victoria Beckham is (and how she dresses) today.

Victoria Beckham arrives on Netflix. The London premiere

Among applause, flashes and a veil of nostalgia, on the red carpet of the premiere, Victoria Beckham brought with her the story of a new phase of his life. For the occasion he wore impeccable white suit composed of blazer soft from the shoulders, top in satin and longuette high-waisted, naturally designed by Victoria Beckham. Clean lines, no excesses: proof of how much his style has become a natural extension of himself. Supporting her are three familiar faces. Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton and Melanie C got their “Posh” on for the occasion. An (almost) complete reunion that transformed the Curzon Mayfair red carpet into a small journey back in time.

Inside the documentary: the crisis and reconstruction of the brand

In the documentary, Victoria Beckham opens the doors of her everyday lifethe one that today revolves around the brand founded in 2008 and which has become its main form of expression. Netflix cameras follow her around preparation for the SS24 fashion show presented in Paris, alternating backstage images with intimate confessions, in which the pressures, mistakes and moments in which everything seemed destined to collapse emerge. «I was tens of millions in the red. I cried every morning before going to work.” This is how the crisis is described, between 2018 and 2020has called into question the entire project, but also the estate of the most watched couple in the United Kingdom. David Beckham’s investmentborn as a gesture of trust, had ended up weighing on both of them: «I hated itbecause he was not only my husband, but also my partner.”

Rebirth came with the entry of entrepreneur David Belhassenconvinced to invest by his wife (fan of the brand) after having second thoughts. It was he who called for radical changecutting costs and rewriting the strategy. «I understood that I had lost my way – she admits – and I learned to say no.»

From Posh Spice to her own designer

In the documentary, as on the red carpet of the premiere, Victoria Beckham appears faithful to a formula that has become her signature over the years: clean lines, defined silhouettes, neutral palettes. Her style today is that of a sophisticated woman, who is inspired more by the Parisian wardrobe rather than the London one. Oversized blazers, flowing shirts, skirts in pencil, flared trousers and stilettos make up his sartorial language, the same one that also defines the aesthetics of his brand.

A language light years away from its origins. The docuseries shows this naturally, alternating archive images and current footage: from the Nineties of “Posh Spice” and famous little Gucci dresssymbol of a glamor constructed with irony, at the early 2000s of the Red Carpet in Cavalli corsets and Chanel dresses. Then the change of direction: in 2008, the birth of the Victoria Beckham brand and the search for a more structured, more conscious femininity.

Today the designer dresses (almost) exclusively what she createsand each collection seems to reflect a new personal chapter. The docuseries comes to close a circle. After the pop spotlight, the construction of an independent career and a near crisis, Victoria Beckham talks about herself without veils.
