The final tournament for the German Basketball Cup was actually supposed to take place in Düsseldorf in the next three years. Now Munich has intervened. And there is trouble.
Actually the top four should fight for the cup basketball Bundesliga will be held in Düsseldorf for three years from 2027, the fact that the BBL now apparently wants to move the tournament to Munich is causing trouble.
“D.LIVE considers the publicly announced breach of contract to be an unprecedented unprofessional approach in German professional sport,” said organizer D.SPORTS. This reaction was triggered by media reports about a planned move to the SAP Garden. It is “a clear wish of the clubs to hold the tournament in Munich,” said BBL managing director Stefan Holz sport Picture. The league therefore now wants to “talk to Düsseldorf and see how we can ideally solve this in partnership.”
“We reserve the right to take legal action”
It shouldn’t be that easy. “D.LIVE has asked the BBL to immediately confirm that the BBL Cup TOP FOUR 2027 – 2029 in Düsseldorf will be held in accordance with the contract,” said the organizer’s statement on Wednesday. And further: “Legal action is expressly reserved.”
In December 2024, the BBL announced that the Top Four would have a permanent location in Düsseldorf. The cup winner should be determined in the PSD BANK DOME from 2027 at the latest, but perhaps as early as 2026. Now the (planned) turnaround.
“Signature is no longer worth anything”
“The signature of the BBL managing director under a valid contract no longer seems to be worth anything there. If a German professional league disregards its own procedures and contracts in such a way, the question arises as to who makes the decisions there and according to which standards,” said Burkhard Hintzsche, city director and head of the sports department of the state capital Düsseldorf.
