Michael van Gerwen is currently in the most difficult period of his life. That is what De Darter from Vlijmen tells in the run-up to the prestigious World Grand Prix tournament in Leicester in the English newspaper The Sun.

Earlier this year, the relationship between Van Gerwen and his wife Daphne and De Darter also came to an end and his father was worried. Cancer has been established for him, but according to Van Gerwen his father is okay. “He now gets radiotherapy and probably chemotherapy for seven weeks. Hopefully everything will be fine after that.”

“Sometimes other things are more important in life.”

His father was operated on a few days before Van Gerwen had to start at the World Matchplay tournament in July – one of the highest -regarded tournaments at the Bond PDC. “That was not the most ideal preparation for me,” Mvg looks back in The Sun. “Sometimes other things are more important in life.”

The Vlijmenaar won his first -time duel on the World Matchplay – it was 10-6 against countryman Raymond van Barneveld – but in the second round he had to recognize his superior in the Northern Josh Rock.

In September, Van Gerwen provided a thunderous surprise by writing the World Series of Darts Finals in Amsterdam, his first big title in two years. Occasionally his game was once again as usual. De Vlijmenaar settled in the final with world champion Luke Littler. It became 11-7. “I did not expect that I was capable of this,” said Van Gerwen after that match.

“Don’t worry, I’m coming back.”

During the World Grand Prix tournament in Leicester, Van Gerwen has to compete against fellow countryman Dirk van Duijvenbode in the first round on Tuesday.

The Vlijnenaar, who has already won this tournament six times, seems to be back on the way after his impressive victory in Amsterdam. But he emphasizes in The Sun that he needs time “I am in the middle of the divorce. I take my time with my children. Everything is now different for me. I have to find a new routine. That takes a few months, but I will come back. Don’t worry.”
