The 05s have a long time with Nikosia, nothing wants to work. Then there is a key moment.

Bright victory at the Conference League premiere: FSV Mainz 05 is successfully put into European competition through a 1-0 (0: 0) at Omonia Nikosia.

Nadiem Amiri (75th) met for the guests by penalty. Then there was a scandal: when the Mainz players cheers, supporters of Nikosia threw drinks in the direction of FSV professionals. Ben Bobzien was hit on the neck and sank to the ground. Serbian referee Milos Milanovic then sent both teams into the catacombs. After a short break, the game could be continued again.

Mainz trainer Bo Henriksen decided in Nicosia to be a surprise in the starting eleven. The only 17 -year -old defender Kacper Potulski gave his professional debut after he had previously only been used for the second team of the Mainz team.

Already in the fourth minute, Potulski and his teammates had to survive the first moment of shock when Nicosia’s striker Ryan Mmaee was up and then curved the Mainz keeper Robin Zentner. However, Mmaee shot next to the goal. The hit would not have been counted due to an offside position anyway.

After that, the FSV took control more and more in an entertaining first half. Arnaud Nordin had the best chance, whose flank flew through the penalty area of the home side and crashed into the post (36.). The Mainz remained dangerous until the break, but could not convert their superiority into a goal.

After the change of sides, the game became tough. Uncocentration crept in on both sides. The 05s had a significantly more possession, but they did not come to compelling chances for a long time – until Kaishu Sano was fouled by Omonia’s Saad Agouzou in the penalty area. Amiri secured the due penalty.
