The Niners Chemnitz delivered a gripping duel with Panionios Athens at their premiere at the BKT Eurocup. On Wednesday (October 1), the Saxons lost in a typical Greek, intensive basketball atmosphere with 86:89 (45:49) after extra time. The game was a roller coaster and shaped by many runs. First Chemnitz caught up with a big gap and took the lead, which the Rodrigo Pastore team played away. So it went into the extension, where the Niners finally weakened during the finals.

Niners fleet the start completely

The Niners did not get well into the game at all, the Greeks were able to work out second chances again and again in the early minutes, because the European Cup winner of 2024 literally did not get any access to the rebounds. After not even seven minutes, it was already 7:18 from Chemnitzer’s perspective. And since the Rodrigo Pastore team also gave the ball too easily in the following minutes, the gap to the quarter siren grew up to 17 points (13:30).

At the beginning of the second section, things went much better for the Niners, who were now successful from the triple line several times. With a 13:4 run, the host’s lead was shortened to eight points (26: 34/14.). Panionios coach Luka Pavicevic took a break and interrupted the rhythm of Chemnitz. The following sequences again belonged to the hosts, who could expand their upholstery on 14 points before the Niners started the final offensive of the first half. Pastore Hypte his team from the sidelines, led by Corey Davis and John Newman III (13 points each after 20 minutes) until half -time. The 45:49 went into the break.

Chemnitz turns the game in the third quarter

In the third quarter, Chemnitz’s catch -up continued. Nike Siband was able to score five points in series and put his team in the lead for the first time in this game with a basket (54: 53/26.). At that time, not much went together for the Atheners, numerous litters were awarded and the Niners used the ice cold. A 17-0 run now brought its own 13-point lead, which has a new point together to the siren to nine points (66:57).

And also in the final quarter Panionios stayed on the trigger, scored the first nine points and thus equalized. Only then did the fourth section come through Davis and Newman III. But that didn’t make calm. It remained exciting to the end. After an eight-point run, the Greeks were suddenly ahead with four points in the last minute. Thanks to two successful free throws from Yordan Mingev, the Niners were able to compensate for the clock with four seconds. Panionios was supposed to get an attack, but the ball turned out and so Chemnitz had a last turn. Kevin Yebo but did not put the basket.

Overtime brings the decision

So there was an extension. There the Niners grabbed the lead and was able to claim them with a lot of fight and despite many opportunities for almost the end of the five minutes. Almost 30 seconds before the overtime expired, the American Jayl Hands in the service of the Greeks scored a threesome to compensate and immediately followed one after another pointless attack by the Chemnitz. The Niners also awarded their last attempt and had to get off the field as a loser after intensive 45 minutes. Davis was the top scorer of the game with 26 points. For Panionios, Michalis LOUNTZIS came up to 20 points.
