Steel snails are used as a building material, to strengthen roads or to install dikes. But lately there has been a lot to do about the product. The substance would cause irritated airways and you can get a serious eye injury.
That is why the municipality of Beverwijk now decides to introduce a general prohibition on steel snails. “It has been clear for a while that the application of steel snails is doubtful. That is why we do not want to doubt, but already take a step in the right direction and simply prohibit it,” Laig Alderman Suzanne Klaassen.

Because of the new Environment Act, municipalities can consider whether they prohibit substance such as steel snails or not. According to Klaassen, there was no big unrest about the product in the municipality of Beverwijk, “but there was doubt,” she tells. “Certainly at playgrounds or parking spaces.”
Nationally, there is still room to leave the decision to companies themselves whether they use the product or not, but Beverwijk definitively puts a line through the product. “We can now opt for a ban locally, that does not yet apply nationally.”
Klaassen says that there will certainly be enforcement and control on the ban. This is carried out by the Environment Service.
