“I am very happy, I really did not expect this as a first -year promise,” says Vierstraete. “I never got a medal at the Juniores, and now as a first -year promise I finally have it. I had ambition for a top ten spot, that would have been very nice. But I really didn’t see this coming. I didn’t think this was possible.”

The hard headwind makes the European Championship time heavy. “But I was able to drive reasonably stably through the wind. I had heard from the juniores that they went from right to left because of the wind, but I could continue to go reasonably well. I was also above my tempoplan all the time. Then I realized that it was very good.”

World Championship in Chile

Vierstraete combines the road with the track cycling, where it is part of the chase team that hopes to qualify for the next Olympic Games. “The slope is also a discipline that I really like, and that I would like to continue to combine with the road. I think I am getting stronger from the combination.”

“We are working very hard with the slope team towards the World Cup in Chili, because we have the ambition to ride a very nice chase. I hope to make something beautiful out of it. Federal coach Ludwig Willems had asked me to ride the road ride on this European Championship, but the pist coach (Tim Carswell, Red) would rather not make it.”
