The municipality of De Wolden is still aiming at a natural cemetery, but the plans have been expanded. The resting place must also get a hiking garden with trees and plants that young people can learn about.

Alderman Albert Haar (D66) announced this. “Bushes, plants and trees are provided with a sign with information. In this way the cemetery has a double role: room to bury, but also place where people can learn.”

De Wolden has been trying to construct a natural cemetery for some time. Two years ago the subject was also on the agenda. The plans are now ready and she hopes to submit local politics at the beginning of 2026.

He can’t say anything about a location. “You should always be careful with that because something so sensitive can be,” says the alderman. “At the beginning of next year we will discuss this with all the groups.”

A nature cemetery is a place where bodies are buried and are returned to nature. For example, there are no tombstones and graves are not cleared.

Several green natural cemeteries have been added in Drenthe in recent years. In Zuidvelde, Anloo, Eext and in Witteveen, people can find eternal burial.
