The story is not repeated, but rhyme. It is that the same people who are involved today in the narcoescandal had seen the faces six years ago. It happened in 2019, in what was an event that eventually charges more and more relevance: at that time Javier Milei went to visit Carlos Saúl Menem to his department, a meeting in which he met his nephew, Martín, and from which he left with the prophetic idea that the former president had enthroned him as his successor. Some time later, the historic spokesman of the “Turk”, Ramón Hernández, would confess that Menem told all those who were going to see that they were “destined” to be presidents. But that is another story.
The truth is that in that meeting Menem told Milei that he had to “be careful” with José Luis Espert. That is at least what the other two witnesses of that conclave, Mariano Fernández and Diego Giacomomini declared. Economists were the only friends that the libertarian lonely had, and that day they were part of the meeting. And they not only heard that, but, as they later told in the networks and on television programs, they said that Menem had told everyone present that “the care” that had to be had with Espert was because Duhalde and “Intenders of the Peronism of the Conurbano” had gathered a “seven -digit figure in dollars” for the campaign of the Economist Calvo. The sources of financing of the sister campaign, as seen, made noise for a long time.
Giacomomini and Fernández were crushing with this story for two years. In fact, the one who also seemed to share it was Milei himself. In that 2019 he signed a letter – together with the other two – where he questioned Espert for his lack of attachment to “the ideas of freedom” and declared because he did not support his presidential candidacy. Between lines, distrust of its transparency was read in that text.
However, two years later many things had changed. One was that Milei and Espert no longer detest, as they had done during the last five years. At that time they had formed an alliance to compete in the legislative elections of 2021. But there was a problem: Giacomo and Fernández continued to insist with the opacity of the author’s accounts of the phrase “jail or bullet.” And here is where the story connects to the present.
It is that Espert decided to bring his detractors to trial, for feeling slandered. And his defense lawyers were two famous men today: Diego Spagnuolo and Francisco Oneto. The same lawyer who defends Fred Machado, the alleged drug trafficker who “donated” 200 thousand dollars to Espert for the 2019 campaign and lent his private plane and his armored car. Casualities of life, but it is not the only one. In that trial the one who left in favor of Espert was Milei himself. In an interview in the Oneto study, the libertarian declares that those who until recently were the only friends they had lied in their television statements. It is more than curious: for years he had been next to Giacomomini and Fernández while they held the lack of transparency of sister, but only agreed to go out to refuse them when he allied with the baldness. “We were friends for 16 years, but we are currently distanced by political differences,” says Milei in the archive attached in the cause. When asked if Menem had assured that Duhalde and mayors had given millions of dollars to Espert was blunt: “No one said that.”

The cause was finally filed after an agreement between Espert and the denounced. Today Milei returned to the subject in a conversation with entertaining Antonio Lajo. “They are hairdressing chimentos,” he said about the new complaint to Espert, “as also happened with the 2019 campaign.” The story is not repeated, but rhyme.
