Three weeks after his death, a large exhibition with clothing from the Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani was opened in Milan. The show in the Pinacoteca di Brera art academy is under the motto: “Milano, Per Amore” (“Milan, out of love”). Among other things, the suit for Richard Gere in the Hollywood film “American Gigolo” (“A man for certain hours”) can be seen, with which Armani made the international breakthrough at the beginning of the 1980s.
The star designer and head of the billion dollar group of the same name died on September 4 at the age of 91. The exhibition had been planned for a long time. Until shortly before his death, he participated in the conception. The show can still be seen until January 11th next year. The approximately 120 clothes hang in the Pinakothek between world -famous paintings by artists such as Caravaggio and Raffael. The house in which Armani lived is only a few steps away.
“You come here because of the art”
The creations from about half a century of career are arranged between the works of art in the middle of the halls. At the express request of the fashion designer, however, the focus should not be on the clothes and suits, but the paintings. Armani himself is quoted with the sentence: “You come here because of the art.”
On Sunday, a show of the 50th anniversary of the Armani Group is to take place in the Pinakothek rooms as part of the Milan fashion week. The Italian had founded his company in Milan in 1975. He was very connected to Italy’s second largest city. In contrast to many other sizes in the fashion industry, he never moved to Paris, but always stayed in Italy. His ashes are buried in the Armanis family grave, about an hour’s drive from Milan.
