It is not completely new. Tow tent tents are already being sold and are a further development of towbar boxes to take things with you. Nevertheless, many do not yet know about existence.
Caravan costs a lot of action radius
And that is a shame, because especially with electric cars it can be wiser to go on holiday with a tent on your towbar than with a caravan. Because the streamline of an EV is interrupted by the caravan, and these cars are very aerodynamically optimized, plummet the range considerably – especially on the highway.

The same applies to a roof tent, roof box or other construction that breaks through the streamline. Because Thule’s tent is on the towbar, this has less influence on the consumption. Incidentally, that influence is not zero.
Camping on a towbar
The Tekthaaktent is called Outet and is designed for a maximum of three people. The frame has wheels so you can easily take it off. According to the manufacturer, the towbar of your car must be able to carry a weight of 70 kg (ball pressure).
Of the tent folded outyou still have access to the trunk. If you have folded the tent, it is just behind the tailgate that can no longer be opened. The manufacturer has devised a solution for this. By pressing a lever down, the whole is tilted slightly backwards and every tailgate can still be opened. Incidentally, the tent can simply be disconnected from the towbar. You then have a separate tent that can stand off the ground.
If you fold out the tent, the mattress immediately ends up in place. So you don’t have to take this separately in your car. The kit is not cheap. You pay 4,000 euros for the towbar tent.
