Departing VfB boss Hitzlsperger: With Stuttgart knowledge to the new club

Retires from VfB at the end of March

After retiring as CEO of Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart, Thomas Hitzlsperger set himself a minimum deadline before signing with a new club. “I imagine that I won’t be working for another club until the end of the year,” said the former international of the “Stuttgarter Zeitung” and the “Stuttgarter Nachrichten”. First of all, he wants to break away professionally from VfB and build a little emotional distance. “It would feel wrong to sign somewhere else in two weeks,” emphasized the 39-year-old.

However, he is certain that he would like to return to a responsible position at a club in the future. “As of today, I can say: I would like to have this experience again – with the knowledge of today,” said Hitzlsperger. The EM runner-up from 2008 officially ends his term on March 31, but has already handed over the business to his successor Alexander Wehrle.

Hitzlsperger has been CEO since 2019 and previously held various positions at VfB Stuttgart since 2016. Although he did not achieve all the goals he had set himself, he was basically very satisfied with the past six years and at peace with himself. “It was always my goal to create structures at VfB and to push processes that are not dependent on individuals. We succeeded here: I can walk and leave a foundation on which to build,” he summed up.
