It is a building that is located near Utrechtsestraat. A video shows that one of the squatters on the first floor closes the shutters. There is also a banner with the text ‘Wonen is a right’ hung by the window. Another part of the group is on the street at the front door.
Agents
A police spokesperson said it is about 50 to 60 squatters. Agents were in the area around 3:15 pm, but had not yet spoken with the group. That happened shortly after, saw a reporter from AT5. The officers left just before 4 p.m.
The squatters tell AT5 that the building has been empty since 2018. They hope that twelve squatters can live in the coming period.
Furthermore, they say that part of the group has been there for four days, although the question is whether this is correct. In any case, the police were not aware of it. It is important for squatters to sit there for a few days before their squat action becomes known, because they hope that they have house rights and are not immediately evacuated by the police.
Well inhabited
According to the caretaker, the one who manages the building for the owner, it is not true that there have been squatters for four days. He was there himself on Thursday and there was a painter on Friday. He also says it is just inhabited on paper. There are furniture and there is clothing in the building.
The caretaker or owner may make a declaration. The police said they are waiting for the report, then a decision is made. In addition, it is already being investigated how long the squatters actually have been in the building.
