The image of a sitting soldier in Veghel has been destroyed, vandals have destroyed the head. That is why it was decided to completely remove the war memorial. The statue is part of three images of soldiers in the municipality of Meierijstad. At the place where the soldier was sitting on the bench, a pylon has now been placed with the message of a sad citizen.
The plastic statue of the soldier sat in Veghel on a wooden bench in front of Villa Klondike on Hoogstraat. The war memorial was also damaged in July, then the course of the gun was cut off Omroep Meierij.
The municipality announced after that destruction that it would go in consultation with the supplier to see how this kind of destruction can be prevented.
Images as a tribute
In May of this year, the municipality of Meierijstad placed three soldiers images in various places in the municipality. There is the same soldier in Schijndel and Sint-Oedenrode.
The image in Schijndel has also been destroyed several times. There the image disappeared even after a few days after placement. Vandals had set it a little further away. After the statue was replaced, soon afterwards his gun had to suffer.
The benches with the soldiers in Meierijstad are a tribute to the soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division that played an important role in the liberation. This weekend it will be extensively commemorated that the region was liberated 81 years ago.
