The Olympic runner-up Leo Neugebauer made a solid start to the decathlon at the World Athletics Championships. Niklas Kaul pulled a mixed intermediate conclusion. Till Steinforth has problems with his operated bar.
Medal hope Leo Neugebauer is in the race in the fight for the decathlon podium. Especially with 16.70 meters in the shot put (season best), the silver medalist from Paris convinced, which, after the first three disciplines with 2765 points, ranks second behind the American Kyle Garland (2927). Gold candidate Sander Skotheim (2693, Norway) is fifth.
Neugebauer lets the ball fly
“Before the shot put, I drank a coffee again and then the thing flew,” said Neugebauer of Sportschau. “I’m super satisfied. It’s fun here.” Over the 100 meters (10.80 seconds) and in the long jump (7.62 m), he had remained under his possibilities.
Kaul: “Everything could have been a little better”
Niklas Kaul, whose strengths are more on the second day, drew a mixed conclusion after the start of Tokyo nation stadium. “It could have been a little better, but it was not a big disaster,” said the 2019 world champion. The 27-year-old sorted himself to Sprint (11.34 seconds), long jump (7.21 meters) and shot put (14.58 meters) with 2414 points.
Steinforth with problems on the operated bar
At Till Steinforth, however, little went together. The 23-year-old had to undergo a groin surgery about ten weeks ago and complained of pain. 11.16 seconds over 100 meters, 7.07 meters in the long jump and 13.73 meters in the shot put were sobering for the third German, which ranks 22 with 2367 points.
Zehmtungers are difficult at the start
In general, most decathes struggled around 23 degrees in pleasant conditions. “It works with Leo and Kyle, with all the rest it is still a bit bumpy. Let’s see what the evening brings,” said Kaul.
Kaul: “Try now, a lot to sleep”
It continues for Neugebauer and Co. after a very long break with the high jump (12.05 p.m.) before the 400 meters (2:55 p.m.) complete the first day. “I am now trying to sleep a lot because it will be little sleep tonight,” said Kaul.
On Sunday, the decathlon starts from 9.05 a.m. local time (2:05 a.m. CEST) with the hurdle run. Due to the long journey in Tokyo, the DLV trio will have to get up early.
Tokyo Olympic champion Warner not surprisingly not there
Damian Warner was surprisingly not competing for the competition. According to the Canadian, the Canadian had to cancel the final training due to Achilles tendon problems. After an examination, no crack was found, but a World Cup participation was not possible for the 2021 Olympic champion due to the symptoms.
Paris Olympic champion Markus Rooth from Norway is also not included. World recordler Kevin Mayer (France) is also missing in Tokyo.
