In a serious traffic accident in the northern Italian community of Giustino in Trentino, the 15-year-old figure skating talent Matilda Ferrari died on Monday morning. On the way to school, she was captured by a concrete mixer and fatally injured.
As the “Kleine Zeitung” reports, the girl was traveling to the bus stop with two friends to go to the high school in Tione. She wanted to cross the road on a heavily used main street. According to initial findings, this happened on a crosswalk, but according to witnesses, the pedestrian traffic lights showed red at that time.
It is believed that she was in a hurry to still reach the bus. The driver of the concrete mixer could no longer brake in time. Matilda suffered such serious injuries that she died at the scene of the accident.
The grief in the community is great. Mayor Manuel Cosi said in the daily “L’Adige” that this was a moment of “great grief”. Nobody is prepared for suffering like the death of a 15-year-old girl. “In this terrible moment I am close to the family. Giustino lost a star,” he said.
The Italian ice skating Federation (FISG) was also affected. On the association’s website it was said in a statement: “At this moment of extreme pain and suffering, FISG Matildes family, her friends and all their loved ones express their deepest condolences.”
The authorities are now examining the exact course of the accident in Giustino. So far, there are no evidence of misconduct by the driver.
