After winning the European Championship, the sick basketball coach was again examined as planned. The result: an operation in the abdomen is required.

Àlex Mumbrú accompanied the German basketball players to the European Championship title, but then missed the big ones. Immediately after the final, the national coach traveled to Spain, where he went to medical treatment as planned. This was confirmed by the German Basketball Bund (DBB) at the request of the dpa.

The 46-year-old was suffering from the tournament. Two days before the start of the preliminary round, he had to go to the hospital in Tampere/Finland and spent five nights because of a pancreatitis.

DBB President Ingo Weiss emphasized that health came first. He said Mumbrú throughout the tournament that he should only do what was possible. The coach absolutely wanted to be there that it was not medically unreasonable. Association doctor Holger Grittner accompanied Mumbrú in Riga all the time.

In Spain there is now an operation for the trainer. After recovery, he should return to the sidelines for the World Cup qualification in November.

Mumbrú was represented by assistant Alan Ibrahimagic during the European Championship preliminary round. Only in the round of 16 did he venture a comeback on the sidelines, but seemed significantly weakened and visibly emaciated. After the victory over Portugal, he returned the responsibility to Ibrahimagic, who led the team with three further successes to the title.

Sports director Peter Radegast recalled the difficult days of the coach in Finland and Latvia: “He was really sick. He himself revealed that it was an acute inflammation of the pancreas as a result of Gallenstein. Sports Association.

Radegast was particularly impressed by the team’s reaction after speculation in Spanish media was that Mumbrú was no longer chief coach. A few hours after retreating on the sidelines, the team was closed behind him. That was a message of the players, which he found “overwhelming”.
