Bayer Leverkusen’s managing director Fernando Carro saw the release of coach Erik Ten HAG as unavoidable after only two match days. “We corrected a mistake that we made in the attitude. Erik certainly has his strengths, but it wasn’t the right time. It didn’t fit,” said the 61-year-old on the program “Bild Sport” on “Welt TV”.
“I would clearly call this mistake,” Carro commented on the earliest discharge of a trainer in the Bundesliga history. Around a week ago, the Werkelf had presented a successor with the Danes Kasper Hjulmand who had been on the list several times. The misunderstanding with ten HAG was not only noticeable in the results, also internally in exchange with the leadership and within the team, atmospheric disorders that could not be overcome.
Carro, who was not considered a supporter of Ten Hag anyway, said to the setting of the Dutch in summer: “Nevertheless, something like this can happen. Anyone who makes personnel decisions knows. It is annoying, but a normal thing that we have professionally dealt with.” The club boss explained: “This is nothing bad. If a mistake is made, you have to react in time.”
After just one point from the first two games, Bayer 04 found Hjulmand on Friday evening against Eintracht Frankfurt (3-1) – despite double outnumbered. “The victory against Frankfurt is very gratifying and will give the team energy. But I am still annoyed about the five points awarded on the first two match days,” said Carro.
Bayer Leverkusens Carro: Tah wanted to go to Spain before Bayern transfer
The Spaniard also spoke about the transfer -free farewell to central defender Jonathan Tah. The 29-year-old no longer wanted to extend in Leverkusen and chose FC Bayern, who had recruited him a year earlier. “Jonathan Tah almost always wanted to leave in recent years, but has decided to stay. Now his contract has expired. Actually, he wanted to go to Spain, but then went to Munich.” FC Barcelona was considered a specific prospect.
