Actually, DBB head coach àlex Mumbrú had already returned to the sidelines. Now he has to step down again.
The German national basketball team is supervised by the nominal assistant coach Alan Ibrahimagic as head coach for the rest of the ongoing European Championship. This was announced by the German Basketballbund (DBB) on Monday. The reason for this is the only surviving illness of the actual head coach àlex Mumbrú, which, according to his own statement, has weakened him too much. Mumbrú will still take a seat on the bench during the games.
A press release from the DBB quotes Mumbrú: “In the past few days, I have recognized that I am not yet physically so far that I have the necessary energy to actively coach the team from the sidelines during the games.” That is why he decided to broadcast Ibrahimagic the role of head coach during the games. “I will sit on the bench and help from there. We in the coaching team continue to work very closely together, and I believe that this is the best way for all of us to help the team make the best possible success,” continued Mumbrú.
When he returned in the round of 16 against Portugal, Mumbrú had not yet worked fit. Due to an acute abdomen, a clinical picture in the abdomen, the 46-year-old was taken to the hospital on August 25 after arriving in the preliminary round venue Tampere/Finland. He spent six days there. Under the direction of Ibrahimagic, the German national team had moved into the knockout round with five wins from five games as a group winner.
