The safety of women in the public space is currently a much -discussed theme in our country. Marijke Helwegen is also concerned about it, although she feels safe in her own hometown. There it is all quite pleasant, she says in the Party. “Because I mainly walk on the street in Baarn, the danger is not that great.”

Phone in hand

Marijke is there for the Baarnsche Courant. “And everyone knows and greet me. People are respectful to me here and I usually walk during the day. Yet on the street I am always on my guard, I keep my eyes open and I have good contacts with the police.”

She continues: “If I make a block in the dark in the early spring or soon in the autumn at seven o’clock, I always have my phone in my hand. Then I can immediately film if someone bothered me.”

“It’s outrageous”

The behavior of men is unpredictable, says Marijke. “I think that as a woman you have to be afraid of some men. This has crept in the last twenty years. There are men who squeeze the buttocks, call women or say very ordinary things.”

She thinks that much more should be done against this. “In my opinion, this must be done much stricter against this. The police really have to be on top of it.”

Cameras in WCs

What suggests Marijke? “I also find more cameras on the street a good idea. As far as I’m concerned, privacy is secondary to. Hang cameras everywhere where it can happen, as happens in many other countries.”

She concludes: “In the Netherlands, in my opinion, there should even be cameras on toilets, because the chance that someone there will be raped is then smaller.”
