In 1840, Visserman Jan Tijsen from Den Oever had his ship built in Makkum, Frisian. The fishing ship was then baptized as the young Jan. A few decades later, in 1900, most skuts had already disappeared and replaced by the much larger Wieringer Aachen.
Eventually the entire fleet disappeared, but the young Jan did not end up on the demolition and remained in service for decades to fish with. The skutje was used on Texel, where the WR60 was renamed TX60.
Oldest sailing fishing vessel
In 2011, a Hoornse Foundation was unable to complete the intended restoration of the fishing ship. As a result, the maintenance was transferred to the Nautical Heritage Wieringen Stichting Onderakkak.
At that time the young Jan was weathered, old and leak, but in four years, Wieringer Kees Hos brought it back to the old state. After the restoration, the Skuutje was festively welcomed in the port of Den Oever. The WR60 is now the oldest sailing fishing ship in the Netherlands.
