Richard Paul Lohse in Lugano

The Masi Lugano present Richard Paul Lohse A large retrospective dedicated to the Swiss artist. The exhibition brings together over fifty paintings, accompanied by drawings on papercoming from Richard Paul Lohse-Stiftung and important public and private collections. The ambitious exhibition project embraces the four fundamental decades of the artist’s careerfrom the forties of the twentieth century until his disappearance. Artist, graphic and theoretical, Richard Paul Lohse was One of the main protagonists of Swiss modernism. Active in the resistance to fascisms between the 1930s and forty and, subsequently, prominent personalities of the group of the Zürcher Konkrete, In his work he never stopped pursuing the utopia of social equality, considering it as a mission, together artistic and political. Systematic, rational and, at the same time, with a strong emotional impact, Lohse’s works have been capable of anticipating practices that come from the color field painting and the conceptual and minimalist trends come, proceeding for generative systems, to the more current computational and algorithmic art. Lohse’s geometric-abstract painting is rationally founded and therefore rationally explained. “The method represents itself, it is the image itself” writes the artist, who in his writings returns several times on the description of the compositional principles that regulate his paintings, clarifying the distinction between “modular orders” – based on constant modules – and “serial”, in which the elements develop according to progressive variations. However, despite the coherence and rigor of his method, at a rational reading his paintings are not resolved neither perceptively nor emotionally: to remain unsolved, beyond any analysis, it is the sensual charm that the chromatic combinations continue to exercise. In the photo, Symmetrische Gruppen Mit Gleicir Farbzahl by Richard Paul Lohse, (1955/61/3). Info: Lugano, Masi, from 7 September 2025 to 11 January 2026 (Masilugano.ch).
