If it is up to European Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra (Climate) in 2040, CO2 emissions reduced by 90 percent compared to 1990. It is an intermediate step to a ‘climate-neutral’ Europe in 2040. To get critical member states on board, he wants a few percent to be smuggled through green measures outside the EU.
Van der Plas announces names: these are the new BBB ministers
Brussels wants to quickly push the new climate goal. The idea is that Hoekstra can make a good decorative with the EU as ‘climate champion’ later this fall at the UN climate summit in Brazil. Yet there is a ‘njet’ in The Hague in The Hague.
BBB: We do not blindly support the Koers-Hermans
Moreover, it leads to division in the ‘hull coalition’, which contains VVD and BBB. “We do not record ourselves on a new intermediate goal in 2040 to be able to put a check mark,” MP Henk Vermeer tells De Telegraaf. “For BBB, climate policy is not a sprint to years, but a marathon that must be feasible, affordable and feasible. We therefore do not blindly support the Koers-Hermans. We assess agreements on effectiveness and feasibility.”
NSC does not want to take a step
Former coalition party NSC is firmly put on the brakes. Member of Parliament Wytske Postma: “We think the interim purpose is unrealistic and unfeasible. We also do not have to include an intermediate goal,” she says. “So be careful when you do that. Then you will get unfeasible goals, which are also largely based on the storage of CO2 under the North Sea (CCS, ed.). Not wise.”

VVD is not going to block plan
Earlier, the PVV also expressed itself critically about new climate plans. VVD MP Peter de Groot calls the plans a ‘strong goal’, but will not block them. He says: “If you see how sustainability is going now, a lot of supporting policy is needed. We believe feasibility and affordability are important. Preciously is therefore a strong implementation package to support companies and citizens in experiencing the transition.”
Climate Animo is also decreasing in Brussels
Just like in The Hague, the political enthusiasm for the climate story has also fallen in Brussels, the attention has been shifted to defense and economy due to all the unrest in the world. Several Member States and a right -wing majority in the European Parliament feel no need to hurry. Yet the intention is that EU climate ministers will make a decision on 18 September. It is not yet clear when the European Parliament votes. The main negotiator comes from patriots for Europe. This extreme right -wing group, with politicians from the PVV from the Netherlands, has nothing at all with the European climate ambitions.
PvdA/GL wants ‘ambitious’ goal
At GL/PvdA in the National Parliament, therefore, ahead is hunted. Member of Parliament Suzanne Kröger calls an ‘ambitious goal for 2040’ just ‘crucial’. “Combating climate change gives us a lot: clean air, a healthy living environment and more certainty for our children and grandchildren. We are already seeing the effects of drought, forest fires and extreme weather,” she says.
Cabinet complete again, now that VVD also submits new ministers
Henri Bontenbal (CDA) also wants to ‘actually get it’ goals
She receives support from CDA leader Henri Bontenbal, who refers to letters from climate minister Hermans in which the Netherlands must confess color. “The climate goal for 2040 must be in line with the Paris climate agreement,” said Bontenbal. “For us it is important that the ambitious objective that we record can actually be achieved, for example through sufficient flexibility. Negotiations are now taking place in Europe.”
