A rainbow has seven colors. But how many colors does the rainbow staircase have at the West bus and tram station in Zoetermeer? There are … six! What about this?

A rainbow consists of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. The stairs at bus and tram stop Centrum West is red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. The latter color is not entirely certain because the colors on the stairs since the opening in 2016 fade slowly due to discoloration and wear. The violet paint layer could also be pink, according to the municipality.

Colors with meaning

Rainbow -libraries in the Netherlands and the rainbow staircase in Zoetermeer are based on the design of the rainbow flag, which has the six colors. According to Guinea piga Belgian LGBTQIA+organization, is the case. The flag was designed by the American Gilbert Baker as a symbol for the Gay Pride parade in San Francisco in 1978. Originally the flag had eight colors, all with its own meaning.

  • Pink: Sex
  • Red: Life
  • Orange: healing power
  • Yellow: sunlight
  • Green: Nature
  • Turquoise: magic/art
  • Blue: Serenity
  • Violet: Character

Six colors

Gilbert worked at the Paramount Flag Company. The company wanted to make a flag, but could not manufacture the Pink Baan. That is why this color was deleted in the second version of the flag. When the flag hanging vertically in 1979, it turned out that the middle track was left behind the flagpole. That is why it was decided to also remove the color turquoise.

This is how the current rainbow flag with the six colors were created. And that is why the rainbow staircase in Zoetermeer does not have eight or seven, but six colors. Do you know that again!
