The 28-year-old was able to leave the entire match on his serve. Overall, Zverev beat nine aces. Whenever it became tricky from the point of view of the Hamburg’s point of view, his strong service helped him out of his term. This scenario stretched across all three sentences.

Fearnley with plenty of double errors

With the opponent from Edinburgh, however, it was the other way around. Fearnley double errors often produced at crucial moments. Already after the first sentence he had seven in number, in the end it was twelve.

As a result, the sentences often looked the same. In the first round, the efficient Zverev secured its break directly in the first serve game of the Scots and then held its own serve until the end. Not that Fearnley had no break chances – Zverev was only always strong when it got tight.

Zverev uses breakballs – Fearnley not

In the second round, too, the Hamburger directly stole the first impact game of its opponent and also secured this sentence shortly afterwards. In the third round, the Scotsman finally got to break Zverev decisively. However, the German fought off several break balls, punished the inconsistency of his opponent afterwards with a break, later with a second.

Then came the only phase in which Zverev did not act efficiently. Fearnley was able to get a service game back, and the Hamburgers awarded several match balls. When the game threatened to get exciting again, the Hamburg residents remained strong and ultimately used his sixth match ball to win.

“In the end he played incredible tennis again. He made it interesting again. I am glad that I did it,” said Zverev, who was able to save a little strength for the second time at the US Open. The Hamburg team had already won his first round match against Alejandro Tabilo in three sets. In the third round, he now meets either Felix Auger-Aliasime or Roman Safiullin.
