Convincing start of the season for Gummersbach’s handball player: At Hannover-Burgdorf, VfL achieved a deserved Bundesliga opening victory on Wednesday evening (August 27, 2025).

Gummersbach won with 29:26 (15:11), the best thrower on the part of VfL was a newcomer Kay Smits with six goals. VfL only had problems at the beginning, but already turned the game in the first half and never let Hannover come back into the game.

“Our defense was very good today, we also remained patient,” said Gummersbach’s Tietur Einarsson after the game at “Dyn” about victory. “It is good to get the first two points. We have big goals, that was a good start”.

Blitzstart Hannover, but Gummersbach comes up

The first two minutes of the 2025/26 season ran suboptimal for VfL: Hannover led directly with 3-0, Gummersbach had not yet arrived in the new season. Newcomer Joao Gomes looked a bit hasty at the beginning and caused two quick ball losses, later the Portuguese, who came from Sporting Lisbon in the summer.

And not only Gomes quickly increased, the entire team bit against the ambitious Hanoverians – in the 12th minute Teitur Örn Einarsson scored 6: 6 and thus ensured the Gummersbach compensation for the first time after the failed start. The goalkeeper Bertram Obling, who preferred to receive the preference in front of Dominik Kuzmanovic, was instrumental in the performance increase and drove one with outstanding 11 parades of Hannover’s good shooters.

In addition to Gomes, the second well -known newcomer, Smits, also received a lot of play with the Gummersbacher. The Dutch convinced and ensured an early highlight when he started backwards over his own shoulder Ellidi Snaer Vidarsson on the circle, which was completely freely included (8: 8, 19th). The longer the first round ran, the more gathered with the guests. Hanover weakened with two time penalties, Gummersbach turned the game and suddenly led significantly with 15:11 at half -time.

Gummersbach affords unnecessary ball losses

At the beginning of the second round, the guests were able to set up at 16:11, but then mistakes crept into the game of the guests. Hanover defended more aggressively, forced VfL to pass passengers and met himself through counterattacks. In particular, national players Renars Uscins (in the end with eight goals in the field), Gummersbach repeatedly presented problems with strong actions.

And yet: the guests remained stable, continued their goals, provided a physically strong, well -organized defensive and kept the distance constantly at two to three goals. Even without the outstanding goalkeeper performance from the first round (Kuzmanovic came for the barely parroting Obling), Gummersbach kept the upper hand – an all -round successful start to the season for the Oberbergische.

Severe Opening program For Gummersbach

It continues for Gummersbach with the first home game against the MT Melsungen (04.09.). The next away game is at TBV Lemgo Lippe (07.09) before the German champions Füchse Berlin opened the second home game (14.09) – a very intensive opening program for VfL.
