After the Olympic victory, Markus Rooth also wanted to choose the world champion. But the decathlon had a training accident – and fails for the upcoming tournament.
At the Olympic Games in Paris, the Norwegian Markus Rooth voted for the winner in the decathlon. Actually, he wanted to demonstrate his skills again at the upcoming World Athletics Championship in September-but nothing becomes that.
As the 23-year-old told his followers on Instagram, a training accident occurred. “I ended up outside the pole dumpling mat,” said the young athlete. He injured his knee and elbow and has to undergo surgery this week.
According to the Norwegian public service broadcasting NRK, Rooth cannot train for four months. When the accident passed, his father and coach, Espen Rooth, was present. He said NRK: “There were a few bad 24 hours.”
The decathlon himself felt that something would go wrong: “My first thought was that the mat was a little too far away. I couldn’t react anymore and thought that it wouldn’t be good.” He drove home after landing and had been examined.
Afterwards the disillusionment occurred: “Of course it hurt. I immediately understood that it is so serious that I can forget the World Cup.”
So he announced his followers on Instagram: “I have to announce that I will not take part in the Tokyo World Cup.” He looks forward to returning as soon as possible.
A year ago, Rooth surprisingly voted Olympic champion and pushed the German top star Leo Neugebauer to second place, who won silver.
