The uncertain future of the German national goalkeeper ter Stegen recently determined the headlines at FC Barcelona. Now coach Hansi Flick is self -critical.
Coach Hansi Flick from FC Barcelona admitted mistakes after the enclosed debate about the injured national goalkeeper Marc-André Ter Stegen. “Whether it all went so well from communication. I think there is a lot to improve. But it is important to me that Marc and the club have approached,” said the 60-year-old on the “Sport Bild” Award in Hamburg.
Flick had recently spoken out for the whereabouts of the injured Barça team captain Ter Stegen at the Spanish top club. “For me it is now important that Marc will come back. He is a top goalkeeper and he really gets all support from each of us so that he can play at his level again,” said Flick.
The club initiated a disciplinary procedure and took it off as a team captain. Ter Stegen later agreed and the league classified his injury as a long -term failure. The disciplinary procedure was discontinued and the captain again.
Its classification as a long-term injury is important for the club for financial reasons. In this case, according to the statutes, Barça can use 80 percent of the salary of a failing player to register a new player. This cleared the way to register the 24 -year -old Joan Garcia as a replacement for Ter Stegen.
DFB sports director Rudi Völler also stands behind Ter Stegen and believes in a comeback of the German number one in the national team. “We are doing well to give him the chance to come back. He deserves this in the many, many years,” said Völler on Monday at a media appointment in Hürtgenwald, but added: “The most important thing is that he gets fit again and that he plays afterwards.”
Until Ter Stegen, said Völler, “we have goalkeepers, who are absolutely at an international level, are the absolute top goalkeepers. I saw it in Leverkusen at the weekend. Oliver Baumann delivered an outstanding game with the Hoffenheimers. I have no abdominal pain at all. And Julian Nagelsmann also didn’t make Oliver or one or the other good,” said Völler. Nagelsmann excluded a new return, like recently. This is “not an issue”.
Nagelsmann also recently emphasized that it would continue to plan with Ter Stegen for the 2026 World Cup. “In my thoughts I know that Marc will come back in December, then the two games will play in March, in June, and then the World Cup will play,” said the national coach in Leipzig at the end of July.
