Charles Michel re-elected as President of the European Council | Abroad

Charles Michel has been re-elected as President of the European Council at the European summit. This is his second and final mandate, which runs until November 30, 2024.

Michel’s reappointment was just a formality. When he became President of the European Council after the 2019 elections, it was always with the intention that he would remain in office for five years. There were therefore no opponents for Michel on Thursday. He was unanimously re-elected. The 27 leaders also reappointed him as president of the Euro Summits.

Michel’s second mandate will officially start on June 1, 2022 and will run until November 30, 2024.

Third permanent chairman

Michel is only the third permanent President of the European Council, after Herman Van Rompuy and the Polish former Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
