Pete Townshend has announced that he wants to tackle his own solo concerts after The WHO’s farewell tour. A total of 16 shows are currently on his band’s tour schedule, which were announced as the last appearances of their career.
Pete Townshend Plan: Continue work to “The Age of Anxiety”
In an interview with the US magazine “Aarp”, the guitarist said that the end of the joint appearances did not mean the end of his musical activities. After the tour, he wanted to continue working on his solo album “The Age of Anxiety”. He has been working on the project since 2007 – the basis is a novel of the same name that he published in 2019.
Townshend already has 140 solosongs in progress
“I want to continue to be creative. I have songs in all possible stages of development, 140 pieces are ready. For ‘The Age of Anxiety’ I have 26 songs,” said Townshend in an interview. In terms of content, he deals with topics such as addiction, recovery and mental health. The album and the book should help to talk more about depression and the role of artists: inside in the creative process.
New concert formats are planned
In addition, he indicated that he wanted to experiment with new concert formats. Pete Townshend consider solo concerts in the form of one-man shows, but is also open to joint appearances with singer Roger Daltrey as part of charity events or special projects. At the same time, he emphasized that both would continue to work together to secure The WHO musical heritage.
Pete Townshend’s criticism of touring life
Pete Townshend had repeatedly critically commented on tour life in the past. “I don’t love to appear. I don’t like to stand on a stage … it doesn’t fulfill my soul,” he said. Daltrey reacted with the remark that he did not want to continue with The WHO if Townshend has no more interest in concerts.
The difficult relationship between townshend and daltrey
In the interview, both musicians also talked about their difficult relationship with each other. Townshend described the differences between them and the difficulties in communication. Roger Daltrey, on the other hand, repeatedly emphasized that as a singer he rely on 100 % fitness, which is an additional challenge in view of his hearing problems.
