Bundesliga club FC St. Pauli dominated against regional league team Eintracht Norderstedt in the DFB Cup, but did not hit the goal and only continued during the penalty shootout. Will the weak offensive become a problem again in the fight for relegation?
Last season, the Kiezkicker scored 28 goals in 34 league games – very few of the league. The fact that the brown-whites managed to stay in the league was mainly due to the second best defensive in the Bundesliga. But: With such a weak offensive, the club will probably not be able to hold the league again. That was clear to those responsible around Andreas Bornemann – and the sports director delivered.
Pereira location an immediate help for St. Pauli
With Mathias Pereira Lage, St. Pauli signed a winger who, according to the data from Global Soccer Network (GSN) with an index value of 65.69, is a solid Bundesliga player and thus an immediate aid for the squad. The only 22-year-old striker Andréas Hountondji (58.75) is therefore considered a good second division player with potential. In the DFB Cup against Norderstedt, both introduced themselves well, but the fans of the Hamburgers still let themselves be desperate. St. Pauli gave up a whopping 41 shots on the go against the fourth division – nobody found their way into the goal.
“I lack the words a bit,” said Danel Sinani after the game. “I don’t know what we didn’t do the gates.” Coach Alexander Blessin was surprised: “Our premise was actually to get calm with an early goal,” said the 52-year-old. However, the user usurer does not worry: “Until the 90th minute it was a really good game from us, with lots of chances and good counterpressing.”
Fujita as a clock and ball thief
The fact that the coach was pleased with the playful performance was also due to the newcomers, the St. Pauli’s game lend more quality, especially Joel Fujita. With the Japanese, the Hamburgers succeeded in a coup on the transfer market. The 23-year midfielder was the linchpin of the game, stole many balls and initiated numerous offensive actions with his passports. With a GSN index value of 64.58, it is also statistically the most valuable newcomer to the club.
Louis Oppie also made a good impression on the left, who is supposed to faithfully replace the Philipp, who was immigrated to Freiburg, and Arkadiusz Pyrka, who represented the still battered Manoli Saliacas on the right. Playful, in the depths of the runs, in pressing – the team has increased in almost all areas. That had already been shown in the test games.
Blessin optimistic for the new season
Blessin sees his team on the right track. “Concepts are becoming more and more concrete. You can see that in the course of the preparation. And that we also scored the goals was seen.” He has long since ticked off the cup game: “For us, the season with a top game against BVB is now more or less starting and we know exactly that this will be a completely different game.”
Defender Hauke Wahl is particularly happy after the narrow victory “that we are now starting the top game on Saturday with a good feeling. We know that we still have work, but we cannot accuse ourselves of much.” Borussia Dortmund will be guest at the Millerntor (in the live center at NDR.de) on Saturday from 6.30 p.m.
High quality jump
Last year, the season for St. Pauli also started a tremor in the cup (3-2 after extra time) against a fourth division, at that time at Halleschen FC. At the time, however, the Hanseatic teams were the worse team, not as dominant and offensive as against Norderstedt.
Despite the effort against the outsider, the team indicated in front of 28,946 spectators that they made a leap in quality before the second season after the Bundesliga return. And that with the score will soon be easier.
