The capital is preparing for the five -year invasion of boat lovers, day people and partygoers. Sail will be a spectacle and based on the 2015 edition – in 2020, Sail was canceled because of Corona – the municipality expects about 2.5 million visitors from Wednesday to Sunday.

Sail fifty years after the first edition of Samplus

The port of Amsterdam has grown out of its seams in recent decades. Note activity has been replaced by massive living and working, but then in modern and renovated apartments and offices.

Organizing SAIL is a monster job fifty years after the first edition. The organization nowadays also consists of dozens of people, who work full -time to the five -day maritime event.

Those who come to Amsterdam this week must take into account extra travel time. The advice is to opt for public transport, bike or even walking. The time also matters: the earlier, the better. All Sail activities start every day at 10 am.

The Jan Schaeferbrug is partly removed to make space.

Motorists are advised to use one of the ten P+R grounds in Amsterdam. They are all open. There are still places to be reserved for a special parking rate for a day or evening visit.

Not to do with the car in Sail during Sail

Furthermore, into the city by car is almost impossible to do. The Java and KNSM island and the Piet Heinkade between Central Station and Pakhuis de Zwijger are car-free between 10 a.m. and 1 o’clock in the morning.

Only cars with a special passage pass are allowed in it. These are intended for the residents. The car-free area is always available for emergency and emergency services, such as midwives, maternity nurses, patient carriers and home care.

The most striking action to make SAIL possible is to remove from 11 August from the Jan Schaefer Bridge between the eastern Handelskade and the Java Island. This bridge has been removed for more than two weeks to make the IJ-Haven accessible to the so-called Tall Ships, the traditionally witnessed sailing ships of more than forty meters, for which everyone comes to Sail.

All traffic is diverted via the Connection Dam. The Jan Schaeferbrug will not be back in use until from 6 September.
