The Dutch hockey players did not succeed in prolonging the European title. In the final, the Orange lost after shoot-outs from host country Germany. In a repeat of the Olympic final, it was still 1-1 after the regular playing time.
Orange started the competition with various opportunities, of which Koen Beijen had the biggest opportunity on the opening goal. Beijen hit the pole. Germany then returned something and got two penalty corners, but did not use it.
The team of national coach Jeroen Delmee took the lead in the 26th minute after Tijmen Reyenga had used a penalty corner. Germany came to 1-1 just after the start of the fourth and last quarter through a goal from Justes Weigand.
Terrance Pieters and Tjep Hoedemakers had another chance in the final minutes of the game to decide the game in favor of the Orange, but both players did not score. Thus, just like at the Olympic Games, the game ended on shoot-outs.
Jorrit Croon missed the first: he shot the ball outside the set eight seconds. Thijs van Dam also did not get the ball. Captain Thierry Brinkman also missed, but he received a penalty ball after a violation from the German keeper Jean-Paul Danneberg. The penalty ball was shot by Jip Janssen, who was the only Dutchman who scored. Germany, on the other hand, was flawless in the shoot-outs: 4-1.
For Germany, which lost the Olympic final to the Netherlands after shoot-outs last year, it is the first European Championship title since 2013. It is the ninth European Championship title in total for the Germans, who are therefore the record holder.
