“My son and the other residents do have a personal budget, but that is not enough to pay for all care,” Sven explains. “For example, my son received a budget for four nights, while a week has seven nights. We hear from the minister that there will be efforts, but the need remains high.”

Because the person -following budget does not sufficiently cover the costs, parents and volunteers regularly organize actions, such as a chicken festival or summer bar. With that they want to support the Vriendenhuis financially and at the same time give the residents extra opportunities to feel good.

“Not everyone has enough budget to buy the necessary care,” says resident Guust Weyn. “Through the actions we ensure that money comes in and that there are activities that everyone enjoys.”

According to Mieke Fiems from the Vriendenhuis ter Loo, the situation is heavy for many families. “People with disabilities often do not come out enough because parents are exhausted. The energy is finished. With this action we want to send another clear signal to politics: this is unworthy of Flanders.”

With his camping campaign, Sven wants to find 100 Peters and meters in addition to political attention who want to contribute financially to the care for residents.
