Daryl Hall and John Oates have included their legal dispute over the public break of their business partnership. This emerges from court documents.
Public fracture and allegations
“The claims were decided in the arbitration proceedings. After issuing the final arbitration saying, the plaintiffs will at the same time submit a notification of the voluntary withdrawal of the lawsuit to the court,” Hall’s lawyers wrote in a status report submitted on Monday in Nashville, the Rolling Stone. The document does not give the date of the decision or further details.
This was the first entry of a party since the 2023 duo made headlines with its bitter argument. The “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame” artist, known for hits such as “Maneate”, “Private Eyes”, “Kiss on My List” and “I Can’t for that (No Can Do)”, no longer spoke to each other, after arousing his share in your company WHOLE OATS Enterprises (WOO) to the Musikverlag Primary Wave.
In a statement from November 2023, Hall Oates accomplished the “ultimate betrayal of the partnership”. Oates secretly negotiated with Primary Wave and then “surprised” him by announcing that he wanted to sell his share of Woe shortly before Hall’s tour start.
Hall said that he rejected the Primary Wave business model and potentially sees it “unimaginable” damage to the WOE assets, which include trademark rights, personal rights, record income as well as social media and website.
Escalation and counter reaction
“In recent years, John Oates’ behavior has clearly removed from a professional and business -oriented attitude. It has become confrontational and aggressive instead of professional and polite,” wrote Hall. Oates had created it to burden and harass him, regardless of his interests or that of Woe.
Oates denied this in its own explanation. He showed himself “deeply disappointed” about Hall’s “recessing, outrageous and false statements”. The discussion has long been in private mediation and arbitration, Hall is the one who causes damage. “I don’t know who or what is moving to these steps, but I’m deeply injured,” he wrote.
Judicial standstill and oates’ realignment
The judge stopped the sale of Oates’ shares until the arbitration proceedings were completed. The status report was now submitted after the court was requested.
Oates did not want to comment on the details, but said in an interview with Rolling Stone 2024 that his focus had shifted since the pandemic. He started to devote projects such as the Oates Song Fest for Feeding America and the Mengesundheit-Initiative Movember. “I got out of the mode to go on stage again with a large band and great production,” he said.
Final break
When asked whether an official end date should be entered for Wikipedia, Oates said that he could not speak for Hall, but “developed” personally and felt “creatively revitalized”.
A friend told him at the beginning of the argument: “John, you were a musician before you met Daryl, and you are still a musician.” Hall & Oates always saw themselves as two individuals who work together. “This is the ultimate expression of it.”
When “The Times of London” Hall asked at the beginning of the year whether reconciliation was excluded, he replied: “This ship is on the bottom of the ocean.”
