The young German tennis player Ella Seidel continued her surprising success run at the WTA tournament in Cincinnati and reached the round of 16 thanks to great nerve strength.
The 20-year-old from Hamburg defeated the American McCartney Kessler on Tuesday afternoon (MESZ) after two defended match balls and hard fight 6: 4, 2: 6, 7: 6 (8: 6). In doing so, she moved into the last 16 at a 1000 tournament for the first time. In it she meets the Czech Karolina Muchova or Varvara Gracheva from France.
Nervous at over 30 degrees
Two days after the coup against the world rankings Emma Navarro, Seidel followed the next exclamation mark in Ohio. Against Kessler, number 32 of the world, she increased significantly after a 2: 4 deficit in the first set, played more powerfully and secured the passage after 39 minutes.
At temperatures above 30 degrees, Seidel looked tired in the second set, Kessler used the ice cold. A close third developed, Seidel kept the nerves in two match balls in the Tiebreak and converted their first to victory.
Soon moved into the top 100?
“Very, really great success for Ella. I’m very happy for you”said her coach Lars Uebel at “Sky”. For Seidel, moving into the round of 16 is a coup. In the world rankings, the young Hanseatic, who only stood twice in the main field of a Grand Slam tournament, is slowly but surely approaching the top 100.
She can already take a lot of positive things into qualification for the US Open in New York. Seidel, who is considered a hopeful talent, is the last representative of a German player quartet at the hard court tournament, which is endowed with $ 5.15 million.
Siegemund, Maria and Lys already outside
Wimbledon quarter-finalist Laura Siegemund (Metzingen) had already left at the preparatory competition for the US Open (from August 24) at the start, the German number one Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau) and Eva Lys (Hamburg) failed in the second round.
