Speer thrower Julian Weber wants to end his World Cup curse. The chances are good than ever, the Mainz is at the top of the world year’s best list.
When Julian Weber explains his job, it sounds wonderfully simple: “Just start and throw the spear and then everything will be fine”. On May 16 of this year there was such a day when everything was so easy and so good. The Mainz spear landed in the stadium in Doha after 91.06 meters. The sports soldier with the strikingly smooth-shaved skull had arrived in the elite 90-meter club with a huge wums! No other javelin thrower in the world has still thrown further this year.
Minimum goal reached, dream destination in mind
In Dresden, the 30-year-old has just become the German champions for the fifth time in a row. The national title is probably a minimum goal in the life of the world’s best spear thrower this year. He won the title in Dresden in the USC Mainz jersey. This is a matter of course for the Rheinhessen, although he has his center of life in Berlin, but regularly stopped in Mainz at home. Home and family are just as important as the large expanses in the javelin throw.
Does the great salvation follow the end of the World Cup?
At the age of 30, Weber broke his personal sound barrier with his 90-meter throw. Now he wants to fulfill the next dream. A World Cup medal. He knows the “ungrateful” fourth place pretty well. Starting with Olympics 2021, the World Cup 2022 and 2023 followed. Always just past the medal. Sure, EM gold in Munich and silver in Rome were a nice consolation. But the longing for the World Cup medal has remained.
With the right rhythm to large width
The hot preparation phase for the World Cup in Tokyo in September. Fine grinding is on the to-do list, also to get back into the rhythm on the start: “I had a bit of problems recently, that took a little bit of self-confidence,” says Weber and also promises with a broad grin: “But I’m confident, and then it goes far again!”
In the competition, Weber lives from the mood, loves it, like the last in Dresden, when around ten thousand fans had ensured that Weber had pushed a verbal tear.
That really took me a bit, they made such a great mood. When so many people call your name, it was really very nice. ”
Julian Weber
In the best case, 68,000 places are occupied in Tokyo. Hard to imagine what happens to the emotions of the likeable Rheinhessen when he wins his long-awaited World Cup medal.
