The United Nations recently released a so-called ‘World Happiness Report’, for which 1000 people from 156 countries were surveyed. The report shows that while the pandemic has made us less happy – our happiness rate has fallen from 7.7 to 7 in recent years – but it also brought us something beautiful.
Happier in this area
Many people indicated that they felt much more neighborly love and that they were also more helpful to others. “We found a remarkable global increase in caring and charity,” said University of British Columbia economist John Helliwell. Science Alert† “In 2021 we did a lot more in helping strangers, volunteering and donating money. There was an increase of as much as 25 percent in these areas compared to the period before the pandemic.”
What makes you happier?
“Helping strangers in particular has increased significantly. This just goes to show that people are willing to support others in need. In this way they not only bring happiness to their fellow man, but also to themselves,” continues Helliwell.
