According to IBM, not only the damage has increased, but also the number of leaked data. In the Benelux it was on average more than 26,000 personal data per incident, just over a year earlier. The American tech company investigated six hundred data breaches worldwide, including thirty in the Netherlands. IBM has been conducting this research for twenty years and it is considered one of the most extensive studies into the financial consequences of data breaches.

Ai

Companies that use artificial intelligence (AI) for their security are on average cheaper. For organizations that apply AI on a large scale, the damage is an average of 5.2 million euros. At companies without AI that goes up to 7.2 million euros. Almost half of the companies indicate that they want to pass on the damage (in part) to customers.

The recovery is also faster with AI: companies with advanced systems got a leak under control on average within 51 days, compared to seventy days at organizations without AI.

Artificial intelligence also entails new risks. More and more often employees use AI tools without approval or supervision of the IT department. According to the investigation, that uncontrolled use leads to an average of 200,000 euros extra damage per incident. Only 27 percent of the organizations investigated have policy for the use of AI. Almost half work there, but has not yet completed it.

“The costs of doing nothing are not only financially, but also mean loss of trust, transparency and control,” says Suja Viswesan, Vice President Safety at IBM. She calls on companies to make AI a fundamental part of their digital resilience.
