Sven Schwarz climbed out of the pool, tore both arms up and celebrated the silver medal like a title. The 23-year-old gave the German team a brilliant end of the swimming World Cup.

“I can’t quite believe it yet”, said Schwarz shortly after his second podium in the title fights of Singapore. Over 1,500 meters of freestyle, he only had to give up world champion Ahmed Jaouadi from Tunisia in a gripping final. Florian Wellbrock, four -time title holder in open water, swam in fifth place as the second German starter.

The appearances of the only twelve -year -old Yu Zidi caused discussions. The Chinese won bronze with the 4×200 meter freestyle relay and thus became the latest World Cup medalist in swimming history.

At the unusually long world championships with 24 competition days, the German Swimming Association had reason to be happy early on. In the open water there were the four gold medals from Wellbrock – one of them with the season. Pauline Pfeif surprisingly won silver from the tower in water jumping. In this way, there is a medal balance of six gold, three times silver and once bronze. In this regard, too, Germany was last more successful in 2009.
