The municipality of Midden-Drenthe has started a test to help young people with problematic debts. The help is intended for young people aged 18 to 27 who cannot solve their problems themselves. “We want to help young people get their lives back on track,” says alderman Jan Schipper.

For this, collaboration is made with the Kredietbank Nederland. The young person who is helped then receives a loan from that credit bank to repay all his or her debts in one go. After that, that amount must still be repaid to the credit bank.

The municipality helps with this. “As long as there is actively participating,” the warning sounds. The test is therefore intended for young people who have little income, but are motivated to get their lives on the way.

According to Alderman Schipper, not only the debts are repaid, but work will also be done on more stable future in a year and a half. A plan is drawn up with a coach. “This contains the goals in various areas, such as dealing with money, school, work, living and health.” That stable basis must then ensure that young people do not fall back into debts.

Young people who want to participate in the test must register with the municipality.
