The Italian cyclist Giulio Ciccone won the 44th cycling classic by San Sebastian.
The 30-year-old from the US team Lidl-Trek prevailed as a soloist after 211.4 km in the Basque Country and celebrated his twelfth victory on the World Tour.
The Swiss Jan Christians from Tadej Pogacars Rennstall UAE Emirates-XRG secured second place behind Ciccone, third was the Belgian Maxim van Gils from the German Team Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe (+0: 19).
In the first race after his severe fall on the 14th stage of the Giro d’Italia in May, Ciccone attacked around nine kilometers from a group of outliers from an outlier group on the last increase. The 30-year-old ultimately successfully defended his narrow lead on the departure and the last flat kilometers.
Primoz Roglic also started in San Sebastian six days after the tour of the Tour de France. The Slovenian teammate of Florian Lipowitz at Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe had climbed on the demanding course with six evaluated and a total of 3912 meters of altitude around 46 km before the end, but could not break away.
Instead, Roglic ultimately had to let Ciccone and the Mexican Isaac del Toro (UAE Emirates) drove out, which drove out a lead of almost a minute until the last climb.
Only Christians came up again before Ciccone put his successful attack. Roglic ultimately finished 2:01 minutes behind Ciccone as 22nd.
