Flavio Cobolli flies to the round of 16 of the Masters 1000 in Toronto. The Roman, series head number 13 of the tournament, beat the Hungarian Fabian Marozsan in three sets (6-2 4-6 6-3 in an hour and 50 minutes), at the end of a meeting that at some point risked complicating. As happened in Arnaldi and Sonego, Cobolli won the first set also playing a great tennis, with the knee problem – he afflicted him in these days – which seemed to be completely overcome. Fast combinations, good service, few mistakes, and an excellent tennis player like Marozsan in clear difficulty. Second set where Cobolli has the break balls to close the meeting, but the Hungarian cancels them all and takes advantage of the great shift unfortunate from the blue of the blue, placing the winning break on 5-4. The shadow of another comeback suffered by a blue stretches, but Cobolli Brekka on 2-2, cancels a break ball the next game and on the 4-2 places the double advantage, which closes the match. In the round of 16, the Roman will face Shelton or Nakashima.

Sonego Ko

Nothing to do for Lorenzo Sonego in the Canadian Masters 1000. The blue fought but in the end it was beaten in three sets by Andrey Rublev, series head number 6 and finalist in Canada last year, where he had also eliminated Sinner in the quarter -finals. The Russian defeated the Turinese 5-7 6-4 6-3 in just over two and a half hours of the game, in comeback, after an excellent start of Sonego who let it well hope.

Sonego, perfect start

Lorenzo did everything he had to do in the first part: impeccable in annuling three break balls in the third game, relentless in exploiting, in the twelfth game, the usual, foolish shift that Rublev often offers, conquering the set for 7-5. The Russian, however, did not break down much and in the second he began to impose his own rhythm. More successful and more precision to the joke, taking advantage of Sonego’s mistakes and attacking it especially on the second service, with a 6-4 finale son of the only break. In the third part, it was left until 2-2, with a very long 10-minute game that basically decided the match in favor of Rublev, which then won 4 of the last 5 games played. For Sonego is the sixteenth consecutive defeat against a top 20, the last victory at Roland Garros 2024 against Humbert.
