Sometimes the club love begins with birth. In Mönchengladbach At least that’s not the exception. In honor of the time -honored Borussia of 1900, a delivery room was set up in the Neuwerk Hospital in Neuwerk district a few years ago, which is all about the traditional club. The view of the diamond has magical effect on the Lower Rhine – even for the very smallest.

The Gladbacher Borussia has existed for 125 years. Time to celebrate. Time to look back and look at the great success again. But also a time to make steps into the future.

Past FC Bayern

The Borussia is still a club that moves the region and that you can’t avoid. An association that is deeply anchored in the hearts of the many fans. The one who is worn by his former heroes Günter Netzer, Jupp Heynckes, Berti Vogts, Lothar Matthäus or Rainer Bonhof -will all be there if the Borussia will be triggered at the weekend with a total of 150 invited ex -players and coaches.

It is the big and still lively stories, especially from the Famosen 1970s, when the “foals” born at the time had passed the big FC Bayern at that time.

Stories live on

Ex-Borussia player Günther Netzer liked to show what he has.

The Gladbach history tells of spectacular offensive football, long hair, of ferrari drivers, rifle throws and self-changing, biting tigers and willing penalty deficiencies, discotheque owners and also a certain bourgeois and down-to-earthness.

Of five German championships, of two UEFA cup victories, of three DFB cup wins, from the myth of Bökelberg, of the great rivalry with 1.FC Köln and of so much more. All of this still fascinates people. “We were never satisfied,” recalled Heynckes a few years ago of his golden player times at Borussia.

Constant struggle for Competitiveness

The great sporting successes have long been over, but the club has developed rapidly. In 1999 the Borussia still had 4,500 members, in mid -2025 there were 106500 – trends.

But like so many traditional clubs, Borussia must also with the modern (football-) Time, with exorbitant transfer fees and salaries. In an economically less luxuriously equipped region, the club must always fight for its competitiveness and find creative solutions. For example, about the development of own talents or skillful, financially displayable transfers.

Long -term growth

President Rainer Bonhof is optimistic about Borussia.

“The overall situation of Borussia at so many years Bundesliga-is sensational, “says Bonhof, who has remained loyal to his club as President. A total of four seasons have the Borussia in the 2. Bundesliga In the meantime, Borussia has established itself in the mediocrity of the Bundesliga. The 73-year-old refers to the also traditional competition in North Rhine-Westphalian proximity: “Other clubs have been more difficult.”

However, satisfaction about the recent past is not so great everywhere. The curse of the earlier great success, the great longing for titles, is steadily above Borussia.

So tones from the club’s surroundings always become loud that the ambitions of Borussia have not been particularly ambitious in recent years. Bonhof wants to contradict this thesis and relies on long -term growth.

“I can already imagine that we will get back to the top third of the table in the medium term. That would be an ambitious project,” says the BMG President.
