THEThe Buddhist treasure of gems and “Piprahwa” jewels, which the Indians consider sacred because they are linked to the remains of the Buddha, falls into India. This was announced by Sotheby’s, who announced the treasure rod in May, described by archaeologists as one of the most precious finds of the modern era (had been auctioned in Hong Kong). The auction had been suspended for the diplomatic pressures of the Indian government and Buddhist leaders from all over the world.
Sotheby’s declared himself proud to announce that, at the end of two months of negotiations with the previous owner, and thanks to the intervention of the Delhi government, the entire casket was purchased by the Mumbai company Godrej Industries Group, which will exhibit it to make it visible to everyone.
India therefore obtains the return of the ancient Buddhist gems, recovering a series of relics related to primitive Buddhism, more than a century after their removal from the country during the British colonial period.
