The Foo Fighters have a new drummer and it is no stranger. The band around Dave Grohl has found her next drummer, Ilan Rubin will in future be sitting behind the drums for the Foo Fighters. He has been playing as a tour drummer for Nine Inch Nails since 2009 and was included in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with the band in 2020. At that time he was the youngest musician at the age of 32, who succeeded. Rubin is also a member of the band Angels & Airwaves.
A musical Child prodigy
Despite his young age, Ilan Rubin has a lot of experience. Among other things, he worked with Danny Elfman, the creator of the “Simpsons” title music and master composer by director Tim Burton. Born in San Diego, Rubin found access to music early. At the age of eight he started playing on his father’s old drum kit. Rubin played for the band Fon at the age of nine and performed at the Woodstock Festival in 1999. At the age of eleven he was the youngest musician who ever played on a Woodstock stage.
In the meantime, Rubin is also active as a solo artist: In his project “The New Regime”, he takes over all instruments himself. He was the first musician to be born in the 1980s and was included in Rock Hall. Rubin has been married to music journalist Samantha Gray Hissong since 2020. Together they have had a son named Elton since July 2023.
Replacement for Josh Freese
The change will take place around two months after Josh Freese’s throwing out in May 2025. He had been working at the Foo Fighters since 2023 as the successor to the late Taylor Hawkins. Hawkins died in March 2022. It is currently not known whether Ilan Rubin becomes a member of the band or was only obliged to do the upcoming live dates. According to “The Hollywood Reporter”, Rubin originally agreed to Nine Inch Nails until the end of this year. Most recently, he informed Frontmann Trent Reznor that he had accepted an offer from another band, presumably that the Foo Fighters.
Freese changes to Nine Inch Nails
Josh Freese, on the other hand, joins Nine Inch Nails as the new drummer after his separation from the Foo Fighters, with the band that was previously active in Rubin. The band shared a photo of Freese via social media and commented: “Let’s fucking go!”

After the Foo Fighters separated from him in May, Freese reacted “a little shocked and disappointed according to his own statement.” “The Foo Fighters called me on Monday to tell me the decision to take a different direction with their drummer. They gave me no reason. Nevertheless, I have enjoyed the past two years with them and will support every decision in which they have the feeling that they mean the best for the band,” said Freese.
