At that time, armed men on motorcycles dragged the parents of the football star. The “Ejército de Liberación Nacional” or “eln”, an extremely left guerrilla movement was responsible. The police were able to free Díaz mother again after only one day, but his father stayed in captivity longer.

The kidnapping hit high waves in Colombia, even the military switched to the search for Díaz senior. Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro had previously stated that all public emergency services would be made available for the search.

Díaz at that time teammates and coach Jürgen Klopp were also deeply affected by the fate of her teammate. In the Premier League game against Nottingham Forest, who missed Díaz due to the hostage-taking, his now late teammate Diogo Jota held up the Colombian’s jersey with the number number seven after a goal. The then coach Klopp also spoke of one of the most difficult games in his career. In a later game, in which Díaz took part again, he contributed his own goal and then showed a T-shirt with the inscription “Freedom for Papa”.

Ultimately, the drama went out positively for the Díaz family. After 13 long days in captivity, the Guerillas Díaz senior released again.
