With Germany, Ann-Katrin Berger missed the finale of the European Championships in Switzerland. Nevertheless, she was on site on Sunday.
She would have liked to contest the final of the European Championship herself, but the dream of the final in Basel burst for Ann-Katrin Berger last Wednesday. The goalkeeper lost 0-1 with the German national team in the semi -finals after extra time and thus missed the chance of winning the title. Nevertheless, the 34-year-old showed himself on Sunday in the stands of the St. Jakob Park in Basel.
At the broadcasting TV station ZDF, Berger was dressed in a black hoodie for a short time and was seen on his head with a black New York cap. There is a reason that she was on site despite leaving Germany at the final. Her partner was on the pitch in the final.
Berger has been in a relationship with Jess Carter for years. She met the central defender in England in her time. They once played for FC Chelsea together, now both are active in the USA for NJ/NY Gotham FC. Berger and Carter have even been engaged since last year. They announced this via Instagram.
While Berger stands for the DFB team between the posts on an international level, Carter runs for the English state selection. The 27-year-old played over the full 120 minutes in the final against Spain. After a penalty shootout it was clear: Carter and England’s women are again European champions. Already in 2022 she won the title with the team, at that time in the final against Germany. Berger and Carter were both there in the final, but sat on the bench for the entire time of the game.
For Carter, the European Championship title should be a nice end after you personally difficult. So she had made it public to have “experienced a lot of racist hostility” since the beginning of the tournament in Switzerland. “Even if I think that every fan has the right to an opinion and result, I don’t think it is right or acceptable to target someone because of their appearance or origin.”
Afterwards there were numerous statements of solidarity. Carter’s teammate and Bayern star Georgia Stanway emphasized: “To everyone who expects such insults: they are not fans. They don’t deserve to be called fans.” England’s trainer Sarina Wiegman described the hostility as “ridiculous and disgusting”.
