Large medal yield on the last day of competition at the University Games on the Rhine and Ruhr: On Sunday, team “Studi” won six medals.

The 4x400m sprint relay of women won the second German gold medal in the athletics competitions on the end. Vivienne Morgenstern, Mona Mayer, Sabrina Heil and Yasmin Amaadacho prevailed in front of Poland and Canada on Sunday. “We are super happy about the gold medal,” said Julia Morgenstern. “We had made precious metal, but we are superstolz that it became gold.”

Previously, only discus thrower Mika Sosna had won gold for the “Studi” team in the Wattenscheider Lohrheidestadion.

Medal mirror: Germany in sixth place

For the hosts, it was the eleventh triumph on eleven competition days across sports. 8,500 athletes were at the start of the students’ world games, Germany finished sixth in the medal mirror (11x gold, 12x silver, 17x bronze). Japan, China, USA, South Korea and Italy collected more podium places.

After the 400-meter sprinters, the 4×100 meter season of the women (in the line-up of Louise Wieland, Talea Prepens, Svenja Pfetsch and Jolina Ernst) followed up with bronze. In the 3,000 meter obstacle run there was also bronze for Adia Budde from the University of Tübingen.

Samantha Borutta and Aileen Kuhn narrowly missed the podium in the hammer throw with places four and five. Sarah-Michelle Kudla reached fifth place in the triple jump. In the 20 kilometers, several athletes were happy about personal best. Frederik Weigel took 13th place in a strong field of participants from the men and set up a new personal best. His teammate Johannes Frenzel reached 14th place. Jassam Abu El Wafa secured 15th place – also with personal best.

There were also gratifying results in walking for women: Ada Junghannß came 17 and also improved their best time so far. Tabea Kiefer completed the good performance with 21st place.

Three silver in rowing

When rowing in Duisburg The former European Vice-European champion Alexandra Föster missed the gold medal in one one. In the meantime, it was even in the lead, but in the end Anna Santruckova from the Czech Republic made pace again and won the victory. Föster finished less than a second later and rewarded himself for a strong race with silver.

“My goal was to win gold,” Föster was disappointed with second place. “Respect Anna that she drove such a strong race. Unfortunately, I no longer have been in it, I have to accept that now.” Team colleague Jonas Gelsen from the TU Darmstadt had to let them tear down in the middle of the race and finished fifth.

The German Mixed Vierer also won silver – however, the cheers over it was significantly larger. Helena Brenke, Sydney Calvin Garbers, Tjorven Stina Schneider and Oskar Kroglowski followed a strong start. Only the boat from Italy reached the goal earlier. “We already knew through the preliminary runs that we can ride at the front: we drove a good race, the Italians drove a good race, and we are just happy to take a medal with us,” said Kroglowski.

The medal triple was completed by the four without a helmsman. Lene Mührs, Olivia Clotten, Luise Bachmann and Paula Hartmann had to face the Great Britain in the A-final of the strong competition. After the favorites, the German boat reached the finish line in front of the rest of the field after 7:06 minutes and won the third silver for Team Studi.

The men fought for bronze over the 2,000 meter long time, but still had to be satisfied with fifth place – three seconds from the podium.

German aft that remains only sheet metal

The two German eighths had started with high hopes at the Universiade. However, neither of them came beyond the ungrateful fourth place. The women drove around the medals for a long time, but let a little springs in the middle of the race. In the end, bronze was missing over four seconds.

A duel between Germany and the Netherlands had already indicated in the lead. Despite the cheers of the domestic audience, the German eighth crossed the finish line half a boat length behind the Dutch.

In the men of two without helmsman, Mark Hinrichs and Tom Tewes (both university Bochum) could not intervene in the allocation of medals. In the victory of the strong Lithuanians, the German boat became fifth with a clear deficit to the podium.

Concert instead of celebration at the end

After the competitions, there was a final concert with the band Deichkind in the Duisburg-Nord landscape park instead of a classic final ceremony. “The University Games enjoy more,” said Christiane Schenderlein (CDU), Minister of State for Volunteering and sportat the final press conference: “Our goal remains to play the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Germany.” Germany wants to apply to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the summer games 2036, 2040 or 2044.
