VAenezia, 24 Jul. (askanews) – The safety works of “The Migrant Child” were completed in Venice, the work created by Banksy in May 2019 on the facade of Palazzo San Pantalon on the Grand Canal, curated by Banca IFIS. The intervention on the mural was decided for the deterioration of a portion equal to 30% of the work of the British artist.

Trust the restorer Federico Borgogni, the safety works of “The Migrant Child” kicked off in early June 2025. After the deficiency, superficial consolidation and depth and cleaning of the surfaces, on the night between Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 July 2025, a part of the wall of the facade of the building was removed.

The choice to preserve the work by detaching the portion of the wall represents an innovation for the wall restoration in Italy. The pictorial technique used by Banksy, combined with the historical nature of the wall of the palace on which the migrant child was depicted, have in fact made the classic restoration techniques used for frescoes and for street art unusable. Through the detachment, therefore, Banca Ifis wants to guarantee – ensure from the Institute – “the full conservation and usability of a unique work of its kind”, which is only the second in Italy officially claimed by Banksy.

Now the small migrant will be restored in the laboratory and at the end of these works, Banksy’s work will be made again usable to the public in the context of free planning organized by IFIS Art.
